Subaru’s and Flooding

So my coworker has a newer model Subaru WRX STI and unfortunately during the storms plaguing the northeast, his car was flooded above the hood.

Now, as a complete menace, he drove the damn thing to work today, and frankly I’m just curious about the risks and what damage could be possible?

Besides the body damage caused by the floodwaters themselves, he managed to get it here fine, didn’t say anything about it running strangely or mechanical/electrical issues so Is it just dumb luck or maybe delayed damage that’ll show up in the coming days? Or what?

This is just for my educational benefit, he’s already in talks with insurance who told him not to drive it and apparently they’re sending someone to look at it.

I have a feeling I’m going to get a lot of “literally everything and anything could be broken” but if you were to sum up a general idea that would suffice

delayed damage that’ll show up in the coming days?

days, months, years ....

How did he deal with the smell? Or is it still ripening?

I totally forgot to ask about the smell tbh but it’a been pretty cool out so at least the sun wasn’t getting it all steamy. The double-menace now drove it home too so I bet it was a little stinky. I’ll have to check in when I see him tomorrow,

You can bet aside from anything else the electronics will be giving trouble.

People in the market for cars and trucks in the near future need to be wary of flood cars from this storm that pummeled the Northeast. (In Philadelphia the Vine Street Expressway - a major artery in the city - was under SEVENTEEN FEET of water!)

I676 was the same way! I actually go to school in Philly and thank god it’s finals week for me because I would’ve had class that night if it was a week earlier!

A lot of areas in the Northeast are a real mess and you can be there will be a LOT of flood cars pouring into the marketplace. Caveat emptor!

You (and your friend)  might want to take look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z46xJQd76yg

Thanks! Yeah first thing I searched was actually “car flooded Scotty” 😂

The electronics and automatic transmission are the main victims.

STI’s don’t come in automatic. 6spd manual only. I’m guessing bad flooding a transmission will likely break it regardless but is it affected differently?

It will eventually damage the transmission.
