Suggestion for first car?

I’m looking at a 96 impala SS, a 09 Volvo xc70 3.2 and a 06 Buick Lucerne.

Is any of them a reliable option or do I need to just wait for a Toyota?

Thanks

Pass on all those.   Look for a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic.

@daywalker Both great first cars. I would add in Toyota matrix (hatchback Corolla), also honda fit and toyota Yaris, they are econo boxes, but easy to drive, and cheap to maintain.

You can also add Lexus since it's a Toyota, especially the Lexus ES350-the newer one, IS350, the GS350 all with All Wheel Drive if you want.

The 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS is a great car.  It has the Corvette LT 350 V8 engine and is a slighly milder example of the RPO code 9C1 - police cruiser.  If you're ok with a car that old, Impalas had respectable dependability for that era.

But it's a lot of car to be your first if you're not ready for the expense of a full size ride that's 27 years old. There are parts on every car that fail over time regardless of miles driven besides normal wear & tear.  I would expect it to at best get 18 mpg on the highway and less in town.  On the plus side the property tax should cost you less because of it's age.  Some insurance companies might add a hot rod surcharge because of the SS.
