Hey Scotty, what do you think about Citroen and Suzuki. If you Change the oil every 5000 miles in a new BMW 3 SERIES, will it last as long as HONDA and TOYOTA?

Is your question about Citroen, Suzuki or BMW?

My question is about all of them. But main is BMW.

Can it last as long? Absolutely. Will it cost the same to get there? Absolutely NOT.

German cars require much more than oil changes. They are precision machines and you HAVE to, and I can not stress that enough, stick to the maintenance schedule. That's not a shot at Japanese cars, but rather a statement about the complexity of German ones.

Most Americans are lazy and do not take care of their cars. We all know this and even Scotty has mentioned it multiple times. I feel this is a big reason why there are so many unhappy people with German cars here in the States. Sure, the cars have faults and downsides like any other. But lack of maintenance kills them faster than most other brands. It is just how it is with them.

Citroen not sure. We don’t have them in the US.

Suzuki isn’t in the US either. But I do know they have some sort of collaboration. So the rebadged Toyota based Suzuki will probably be as good as Toyota, because they are basically Toyota.

With BMW, just changing the oil won’t cut it. They cost an arm and a leg to maintain. IMHO, if you are willing to spend the money, they can definitely last as long as a Toyota or Honda. It will just cost you many times over what you paid for the car. Versus a Toyota or Honda, which can last long, with a fraction of the maintenance cost.

Any car can last, it is just the matter of maintenance level. For Toyota and Honda, it is minimal but for something like a German car, it can be astronomical.

With Honda and Toyota, an occasional scratcher win will suffice to pay for maintenance.  With a BMW, you'll need all 6 winning numbers.

Maintenance goes well beyond just oil changes (which was the only item you cited). Also, let’s not forget the complex electronic modules on these machines.  Some German vehicles can have over 100+ computer modules on board, and diligent maintenance is not going to prevent those from acting up, and then good luck to the pour soul who has to troubleshot and “fix” the electrical issue.

I suppose, in theory, cars can be driven to 100, 150, 200+ hundred thousand miles but for some it will cost an arm and a leg (and your sanity) to get there, which financially can be disastrous for most of us.  Best to lease them and get rid of before the warranty expires.

It can for sure considering BMW makes great engines in general especially inline 6, but you will be spending at least 2 arms, legs, and kidneys to make it last as long as a Toyota or Honda.
