Temporary run to 230 degrees

Hello Scotty and others,

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee w 133K 4.0 Laredo.  Today the temperature elevated to 230 degrees for a short time. I drove 15 miles from my house to my mom’s house.  I then turned around and drove 5 miles where I had to idle while waiting.  This is where the temperature went to 230.  I noticed this and turned the vehicle off.  After 15 minutes I drove the 10 miles home without incident as it returned to the normal 210 degrees.

I changed the coolant 1 year and only 2K ago.  No coolant on the ground.  Coolant is full.

Any ideas?

If it happens while idling then it could be a fan issue. Make sure the front of the radiator isn't full of crud.

by the way, if your engine just starts to overheat, don't shut off the engine because the water will sit still in the hot engine and it will boil. You want to keep it flowing.

Pull over, but keep the engine running, and shift it into 'P'. Turn your heater on full hot, A/C off, and blower full speed. The temp should start coming back down. But if it continues to rise after a minute then shut the car off before it overheats completely.
