[Closed] Overheating on 2014 GMC Sierra

Hi I have a question about my 2014 gmc sierra 5.3 v8 automatic. (I have a light snow plow hooked up to it also). Just like 2 weeks ago my truck started to over heat out of nowhere while driving on the highway. My temp gauge went all the way to 260° and i pulled over immediately and checked it.

I did not find any leaks of antifreeze what so ever and my reservoir was full. Within 5 minutes of this happening my car had quickly went down in temperature. After this I drove it straight home and started to look at it in detail. I than realized that now it wasn't heating up properly and would only go to about 180°. Once this happened I realized my thermostat was failing so I went to buy a new one and put it on and problem solved. Now 2 weeks later,  agian while on the highway my car started to over heat. This time I was well aware to keep an eye out for it and pulled over so my engine wouldn't reach 260°  and let it cool down. (It over heats on residential streets too)

The second time this happened I noticed that the temperature gauge would go up than it would shoot back down to 210° and than back up again. Though it is definitely heating up to 210° and higher. It is not falling below 210° as of now and my question is could it be my thermostat again? I've heard that if I buy a cheap one it will fail again but I'm not too sure. I bought this one at autozone for $50 (duralast). Should I order an oe thermostat and swap it out?

Any help/advice is much appreciated 🙏 and thanks for all ur other videos they definitely help out guys like me that work on there own cars.

Thanks

Sal

Have you checked that your fans are working? I once had a fan go mid-january on a taurus & the junker blew the head gasket before I got it back.

I'd replace the thermostat if you think it's a defect but it sounds more like fans to me. If you have an extra $20, get one of those laser thermometers & make sure the coolant is actually at the temp the gauge is reading.

Hey thanks for the advice and yes first this I noticed is that my fans are on when it over heats.

If they're working & aren't on their way out it could also be a temp sensor which is supposed to trigger them either turning them on too late or killing them too early. Make sure that sensor is sending/shutting power at the temps that GM specifies.

Temperature sending unit.

I'd think it's the snow plow.

This seems to be happening to you at highway speeds because the  faster you go, the more the effect of robbing airflow from the radiator becomes.

Check out some of the snow plow guys' forums. They've been dealing with this forever. They probably have some solutions.

I wish it was because of the plow that way I can take it off my shoulders but unfortunately it over heats without my plow on and at low speeds. Today it was having a hard time warming up. Seems like it's the thermostat again. Just don't know why if I replaced it 2 weeks ago. But thanks anyway

question about my 2014 gmc sierra

1500, 2500, 3500 ??

Sue me. So I don't have every single vehicle powertrain configuration memorized.
The forum instructions clearly ask you to provide your vehicle model. We should not have solve puzzles in order to get it. And if this is how you judge people, then that is your loss.
Jack is correct. The plow is blocking the radiator. Seems pretty "basic" to me.
With this attitude of yours, yes, I think you will be done here too.

Excellent, MMJoe!
