[Solved] Ticking noise on 2011 Mazda 6

Hey all!

I have a 2011 Mazda 6, 4 cylinder automatic, with 109k miles. I noticed this noise when I was standing next to the engine with the hood open. Is this noise lifter tap? If not, what is it, and how difficult would it be to fix myself?

Thank you all in advance!

That's the fuel rail, and the ticking is the injectors as they should.

Does that engine have a timing chain? If so, another possibility would be the tensioner has to be replaced.

I believe the engine has a timing chain.

Definitely check the tensioner then. That sounds a bit loud for a valve tap but it's possible if a hydraulic tappet were to collapse. (My own car has had a valve tap that comes and goes for the last 10 years without causing any problems but it's much lighter than what's in that video.)

To rule out the drive belt effect on the noise, remove it and start the engine. Do you hear the noise again? Also, while it is removed, check all the pulleys as well.

Hello all!

I have a 2011 Mazda 6, 2.5 automatic, 109k, with a ticking noise with the engine while idling.

I wasn't able to deduce whether the noise was coming from the valve lifters or the timing chain tensioner, so I went to autozone and picked up a mechanic's stethoscope (the $10 one, nothing special).

When I put the stethoscope in the locations circled here, I heard a very loud, jackhammer-like sound. However, when I put the stethoscope at these locations, including the side of the engine block, I just heard a "whoosh"-ing sound.

However, I did notice that the left side of the engine (the one with the serpentine belt) was noisier than the right.

While the hood was closed, I took this video, where I put the microphone in the center of the hood, the front of the hood, and then the left side of the hood. Notice how the left side is significantly noisier than the rest of the engine bay. Could it possibly be a bad serpentine belt tensioner?

Thank you all in advance!
