Hi Scotty,
Hello from a fan and subscriber in the Philippines! I own a 2018 Honda CRV with a 1.6 turbo diesel engine. There is a ticking sound emanating from the dashboard whenever the ignition key is inside the car. This sound persists whether the vehicle is off, idling or moving. I had the vehicle checked at the Honda dealership where I bought my vehicle right before its warranty expired last June ‘21. The finding from their technicians and warranty engineers was that “…this ticking emanates from the electric brake booster utilized on all 2018-onwards CR-V units…this could possibly be a reboot/reinitialization function of the electric motor mechanism inside the brake pedal component…we have made comparative tests to our other similar CR-V models here at Honda Makati and this resulted in the similar sound originating from the said electric brake booster. This signifies that your vehicle , NAY-2514 is road worthy and will not cause any impairment to the performance and function of its brake system.”
I told them that this is not a normal condition and the ticking sound shouldn’t persist if this is a reboot function. Despite this, they insisted that this was normal.
I brought my car to a different Honda dealer this October ‘21 for Preventive Maintenance Service and asked them to check the ticking sound without telling them about Honda Makati’s findings. To my consternation, the moment the warranty engineer heard the ticking sound, he told me that they recently had the same case involving a Honda CR-V diesel. They reported the ticking sound to Honda Philippines and they got approval to replace the electric brake booster under warranty! Worse, he said that the ticking sound is not normal, which is why they reported it to Honda for evaluation considering the part in question is essential to the safe operation of the vehicle. The warranty engineer had already recorded the ticking sound in preparation for making a warranty claim when I told him that the warranty of my vehicle had lapsed in June and that Honda Makati deemed this “normal”.
Now I am furious that Honda Makati didn’t bother to report my case for warranty claim prior to my warranty expiring. What should I do?
I hope you can answer this in a video so I can show to Honda Philippines. You are well known among car aficionados in the Philippines and your opinion carries a lot of weight around here.
Love your YT channel. I solved the low coolant problem of my Kia Carnival (Sedona in the US) through your channel (it was a worn radiator cap). Keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
Anthony Allarey
Get the issue fixed under warranty first, before you consider any legal action against the first dealer.
Unfortunately my warranty lapsed last June. Tried to have it fixed under warranty but the dealer deemed it normal. Had a service done in another Honda dealership this October and asked them about the ticking sound. The warranty engineer immediately recognized the ticking sound and told me that they had just replaced an electric brake booster on a unit the same as mine; he even showed me the part they replaced. He said that the ticking sound disappeared after they repaced the electric brake booster.
The warranty engineer had actually recorded the sound on his phone in preparation for writing a warranty claim when I told him that my warranty had already lapsed. He then told me that the brake booster would cost $1.3k to replace!
