So I go to the Haynes Manual and look up rear wheel bearing replacement. Just 1 paragraph, says:”Don’t even think of doing this yourself. Just take it to a professional mechanic.”
Well the whole point of a project car is to do the work myself, not hire someone else to do it. So of course I went to YouTube, which has 2 options:
- Bash out the old bearings with a hammer and then bash in the new ones. Hopefully you won’t bend anything.
- Use your hydraulic press (which I don’t have)
So I look at the Oreilly loaner tool list, and they have this:
I gave it a go.... it worked perfect! Super easy, and didn’t have to take the knuckle off the car. The old hubs and bearings came right out, and the new ones went right in perfectly straight. The only difficult part of the whole job was getting out the old snap ring retainers.
My only warning is that the deposit is $400 (even the Oreilly’s manager’s jaw dropped when she saw that one). So you definitely don’t want to be late returning it.
Nice. I might give this a try one day. Thanks for being the guinea pig. {pear}:surprised:
