How bad is the Oil Burning on the 2AZ-FE 2.4 I4, what exactly does the oil burning cause that is so bad (asides from using tons of oil), and if I did get Toyota to repair the issue what would would they be replacing or repairing?
Seems the problem is within the piston design as the oil holes become clogged and won't return oil back to the oil pan. But another is that people are not checking their oil and causing the engine to run low and causing damage. Many are adding oil between oil changes and also should be checking their oil very requently to prevent low oil damage.
Some interesting reading on this matter:
They key part is "It's come to my attention that the 2AZ-FE engine can burn a lot of oil in 1 thousand miles. This is due to the piston rings in engines 2007 to 2009 or so fail to let oil pass through the piston and back into the crankcase, thus burning it all up in the combustion chamber.
For most people this problem happens at around 100,000 miles, which is sad considering piston rings are supposed to last much longer then that."
Even though I am not mechanically experienced at all I think that this could cause major harm. I hear that a Toyota TSB said cylinder misfire could occur and engines just blow up. Good job Toyota!
The problem is about the defective piston rings in some 2006-2011 model Toyotas with the 2az-fe 4 cylinder engines. Toyota issued a TSB and said that it could cause a code P030# cylinder misfire code. Seals and piston rings need to be replaced by cylinder misfire could happen if not fixed the engine even blows up. I have a friend with an 06 Rav4 with 65k miles his is burning oil so early on. I would stay away from vehicles with that engine the value of them are also extremly low. Ignition coils failing cylinder misfire engines blowing up are all common complaints on these vehicles. The Camry/Rav4 vehicles that were affected later went to a 2.5 engine which did not have nearly any of the issues the 2.4 ones had.
