Toyota RAV4 transmission issue

Scotty,

I have a 2017 Toyota RAV4, all wheel drive, SE model, 32000 miles, bought as a certified pre-owned vehicle from a Toyota dealership.   Shortly after purchasing the car I noticed that when it was cold and I shifted into drive the vehicle would go into Drive and then about 15 feet down the road I would get a loud bang and a jolt that sounded like it was coming from the rear end.    The shop foreman at the Toyota dealership told me it is normal.  What do you think it could be, and is the foreman being truthful?

Does it happen every time you take off cold?

Cars will sometimes snap and pop in the Winter when water freezes up in the wheels and axles.

@carlos
So the issue happens generally only the first time I move after putting the car in drive, it can happen before I even get on the gas and it can happen at any temperature; from freezing to high 90’s.

I’m not sure about ‘17, but ‘18 and up Toyotas, … if bought pre-owned, should have memory flushed back to default settings. I bet whoever “certified” your car never performed this task - and this can only be done by a dealer. So check that first, …

Anyway, … Toyotas "learn" how you, the individual, drives and adjust - and stores - parameters to suit. And so, … just perhaps, previous owner’s habits still reside in memory? Dunno, … but that’s where I would start, …

So the issue happens generally only the first time I move after putting the car in drive and it will happen even before I get on the gas. Basically, I am moving at speeds so slow that drivingg parameters shouldn’t be a factor (1-5 mph within the first 15-20 feet of the vehicle moving forward).

I just conveyed above from a tech I know well who works with Toyotas. When I mentioned to him "certified" - presuming by Toyota dealership, … he just quibbled, "right!”, … than came up with above suggestion - insinuating that, just perhaps, a car was never thoroughly inspected before it was placed on the lot as "certified"?

Anyway, … perhaps you are correct that this has nothing to do with driving perimeters. To my mind, however, it sounds like something hangs up and than suddenly let’s go as car starts moving,… and we now know that it does not have anything with meteorological condition. And that it is not "normal", …
I will talk to him again tomorrow, … and ask him for a next hint.
F.S.
