Scotty I just purchased a 1997 Tercel “Redhawk “ from a local dealership. I paid 3k for the car with 115k. All the fluids looked good and it drove out fine the fans cycled and the AC works and so did the heat.
Less than 50 miles after purchasing the radiator took a dump and their was no puddle thinking they used distilled water so they would be no evidence of a leak. The alternator belt snapped and knowing it drove the water pump I shut it down as soon as I could. I’ve got a bill from a reputable local shop for 1300 bucks to do a timing belt job and a new radiator. Should I go after this small dealership. The Tercel is a one owner by a veteran, so am I. Thanks for being cool, I hope you have some insight into the situation.
Very Respectfully

I would get rid of the car. The Tercel is not a good one to start with anyway.
It replaced the 86 accord LXi hatchback that just locked up the engine at 220k due to a stuck thermostat. I need simple transportation that I can afford. I’ve read the 97 Tercel engine is suppose to be decent even with some head gasket issues. The last Tercels were the best, for whatever that might be worth.
I would consider a Corolla instead. You can find a good one in similar price range.
First of all, thank you for your service to our country. I and many others on this forum appreciate it very much. Unfortunately, you have experienced the all too common dealership rip off scene. I agree with In Thrust We Trust to try to get a refund on this or at least properly fix the car. If they refuse, see if the local TV station wants to cover your story and the dishonest car dealer taking advantage of our veterans. That might induce the dealership to do the right thing for you. Good luck and thanks again.
Thank you Doc, if I had not been medically retired I would still be in. I’ve already emailed the local news station so I’ll keep everyone posted for sure, all advice is still welcomed . I left a message with the lemon law Laywers as well. I don’t think there was an implied warranty on the bill of sale.
Sounds like a real bottom of the heap used car dealer. Most dealers that are even semi-legit are not going to be selling 25-year-old vehicles. Laws vary considerably from state to state, but I've seen enough Judge Judy to know that unless there is fraud involved (as in gross misrepresentation that can be proven) if it was an "as-is" sale there may not be much that can be done beyond applying pressure through local media - your local news outlets may well take an interest in a veteran being taken ripped off by a sleazy dealer.
If I were in your shoes, I’d either ask them to take back the car for a full refund.
Or, if you want to keep the car, have them pay to fix ALL the resultant damages.
I couldn’t agree more actually I just don’t know if there are laws here in Ohio to protect us consumers from bad business, thanks for the reply all input is greatly welcomed and appreciated
Maybe you should get in touch with a lawyer who specialises in the lemon law, in your area. This is what I found after a quick google search - https://www.ohiolemonlaw.com/ohio-used-car-lemon-law/
Did the Bill of Sale state that the sale was "as is"? Long before Judge Judy, Judge Wapner used to say, "Get it in writing".
