Hello. I have a 2000 tundra SR5 V8 with 293,000 miles. (No codes) The transmission will slip horribly and bang into second gear when I am accelerating hard or starting off up a hill. I have found that this can be avoided by putting the gear selector from drive into 2. When the gear selector is in 2, it shifts perfectly into second gear like a new transmission. It also hits kind of hard from second to third and third to fourth. I do not know what the issue could be since it only acts like a worn out transmission when it is in drive. Anyone know what the issue could be? Maybe a shift linkage problem? The old owner has said that it has been doing this for 17 years.

if it's been slipping and banging for 17 years, then that transmission is probably going to fall apart any day.
The thing is, when I put the gear selector into 2. It shifts perfectly. If it was worn out that would not be the case
I'm saying the slipping and banging causes wear, not the other way around.
Anyone know what the issue could be?
Certainly at that age and mileage your transmission could be worn out. (Don't believe anything the seller told you. When is the last time the transmission was serviced?) Have it diagnosed by a transmission specialist with a fancy scan tool. If you're lucky it might be something like a hinky shift solenoid.
I have a suspicion that it is a solenoid. It acts like it slips when it is in drive but when I select gear 1 and then to 2 or just put it into 2, it shifts into second gear perfectly.
The only way to find out is to have it diagnosed. Letting it continue to slip and slam into gear will just cause more damage.
When was the last time this 23 year old vehicle had a transmission service?
Fluid looked good when I bought it 2 years ago. I've since changed the fluid twice and the filter once since I've put 60k miles since I got it.
