Trans oil smell

I have a 2010 jeep compass with 76000 on it. I had the trans fluid changed a few thousand miles ago. Out of nowhere recently, I've started smelling trans oil at idle or low speed. The vehicle shifts smoothly and is not leaking. What could cause this?

Who changed it? Most likely it's been overfilled with fluid and is perhaps seeping out between the pan and gasket. Transmission fluid always starts to leak when it gets overfilled because they operate off pressure. Too much fluid will cause too much pressure inside the gearbox and force some fluid out.

Milex(mr. Transmission) they've always done good work for me.

Do you see any ATF seepage on the pan itself? Like is the pan coated with drops of ATF? It may not be leaking but seeping a little out of the pan gasket and are most likely smelling that.

@razmigb
I haven't noticed any, however I will look again. I really appreciate your quick response to this. Thank you so much.

Seepage like that is pretty common after a transmission fluid change. It usually happens after the transmission builds up normal pressure while driving it with a new gasket. As long as it's not leaking it shouldn't be a problem. You can just wipe off all that excess fluid; you're most likely smelling it burn off from the heat of the transmission.

That's good to know. Again, I thank you for the insight. I was worried I was damaging it by driving. I will try to get under it this weekend.

Check transmission cooler lines from transmission to cooler at radiator. They can crack or corrode and not be a easily visible small leak.

@heyinway
I will do that as well. Had that happen on my nitro. Ended up putting an aftermarket cooler on that one because it was cheaper than a factory.

Was this a flush or drain and fill?

@clovishound
It was a drain and fill.
