Should I turn the AC off before the engine

Everyone talks about in old days to turn off AC before engine and wait for engine on before turning on AC. I’m not worried about the power I’m wondering if leaving AC on does damage to the compressor from turning engine off with a AC leaving pressure in the system and just turning engine off? Thoughts ?

That might be the case for something as old as my 1971 Ambassador whose AC system has simple electrical switches controlling it. On that car if the AC ls left on the compressor engages while cranking, putting additional load on the starter. You did not state what kind of car you have but for the last 30 years or so virtually all of them have computer controls that prevent this. (In fact I have a 1986 model where the compressor clutch is computer controlled.)

It doesn't matter at all if the AC is left on when the engine is shut down. Whether you turn off the AC before the engine or not the same thing happens, the compressor gets turned off and pressure equalizes in the system.

The compressor will be fine. However if you live a humid area, switching from AC to outside air will help dry off the evaporator core before you park it. It could help prevent nasty mildewy smells.
