Hello Scotty,
About 4-6 months ago I purchased a used 2011 Toyota Tundra V8 5.7L SR5 with 109K miles (now has (116K) for what I believe was a good price. On the test drive, it was fine, but I was driving down city roads and couldn't floor it like you do on the highway. After taking it home, I noticed that when it would go from 35mph-70 or more, it would "jerk" on the way up. After about 2-3 weeks of that it stopped, but now it shifts extremely late. Sometimes I'll be halfway between 3rd and 4th before it switches to 2nd gear, and then after it drops to 2nd it'll either shift late again to get to 3rd, or shift extremely early. When it doesn't shift on time it sounds like the engine is sucking in a large amount of air. I changed the air filter for another regular one, and then threw on a K&N on to see if it would change anything, but it's still doing the same thing.
When I took it to the dealer (not the same one I bought from because that one is 7 hours away), they told me it was normal and not to worry about it however I am worried because no other tundra I have been in feels this way. I have 10,000 miles left on my transmission and engine warranty. Any suggestions?
1st - Get a diagnosis by your trusted mechanic. Is it transmission failure? Need a reprogram? etc.
Then continue by contacting the dealer by phone and describing the issue/given diagnosis. See what they come up with - if anything. Can't hurt.
If it's something like transmission failure, I'm assuming they will agree to see it, but you're in a sticky situation with major repairs even if by some miracle they are willing to do it free since the dealer is so far away.
You're between a rock and a hard place. But I would start with trying to diagnose the issue.
You got ripped off. I would take that thing back where you bought it in the first place. Try to resell it back to them.
Go to a transmission pro and have them check the transmission and get their official report. The way you describe the situation, tranny does not seem to be normal.
