Transmission Fluid Very Dark

Hello Scotty and all the regulars here. I have watched a few of your videos and really appreciate the way you explain things. I have a few questions I would appreciate some guidance with.

My uncle gifted my family a 1999 Honda Accord V6. I have it about there years now as my everyday driver and it has 172,000 miles. Car runs fantastic. I have only changed the alternator, the idle air control valve and EGR and had the EGR system cleaned out by drill.

So i checked the oil recently because a different mechanic had changed it and according to the dipstick it was overfilled. This got me thinking ill check the other dipstick for the transmission fluid. It was now low or high but was very dark with not a hint of red. I asked a couple of mechanics and they said don’t even think about changing it as it likely has never been changed and could cause a lot of problems.

What do you think? I understand the logic of not changing the fluid because the devil you know right. But since its black doesn’t that means active damage is being caused? I would say the transmission is 90% great. When warm it sifts smoothly but occasionally at low speed it seems to have trouble deciding if it wants to shift up. I think its from second to third. Again this doesn’t happen often.

what do you think?

p.s. i would feel comfortable rebuilding or replacing the transmission on this car as i feel it can go for many many more years but i don’t think im there yet.

it means the damage is done, unfortunately. Black is clutch material.
