RPM jumps around going uphill DTC P0741

Hi scotty

i have. 2007 Kia rondo with the 2.7l v6 and 5 speed transmission.  It has 178k miles and has been/ is a great car.
lately I have noticed on small grade hills or hills in general as I am going up the trans will go in and out of the locus torque converter.  The tach show this cycle.  Twice I have gotten a P0741 code.  Is there a simple Solenoid replacement? Or is there some thing more serious?  I have replaced the trans fluid per the schedule and it shifts fine (no issues).

thank you.

I have no idea what this means.

with that many miles, the transmission is probably worn out. I'm amazed a Kia went that long.

as the lockup toque converter goes shifts in and out as you are going up a hill, the tach will show the RPM going from (example) 2300 rpm to 2500 rpm and then it returns to 2300 and then back to 2500. This cycle continues as your are going up the hill. It did not do that before.
As for being amazed, I have had extremely good reliability with my Kia, my daughters Hyundai, and my previous Hyundai. This Kia has been rock solid with just normal maintenance. This is the first time I have an issue that concerns me that there may be a issue. I know that some transmissions you can change some solenoids or such. I was not sure if this transmission has that capability.

Kia is not known for good engines or transmissions. Scotty advises against buying Korean cars, period.
It's not uncommon for them to need replacing with less than 100k
This is the only generation of the Rondo that was sold in the USA before it was discontinued in 2010. Very few were sold.

when is that last time it was serviced. What did the fluid look like?

I would take it to a transmission specialist and see what they think. They can run some diagnostics on it.

But automatic transmissions are mostly closed units and not very accessible, unfortunately, so not much you can do other than replace them. The torque converter clutch is buried deep in there and welded shut.

You could try replacing the solenoid, but they rarely go out on their own, and it's usually just a symptom of a worn out transmission (common with your amount of miles). So it's usually a waste of time and money.
