Tyres spins at wet road-Tyres seems fine

2004 Corolla auto with 230k kms-When the road is wet, it seems my front tyres spins a lot before taking off. I noticed that tyre pressure were very low and pumped air back in. Wonder if it was a air pressure issue or sign for me to replace tyres. Car has somewhat low quality tyres and not even same tyre brand. Tyre track seems OK and no visible damage to any tyre except one has a side cut.

Well since you're here, I guess low pressure wasn't the issue.

The correct pressure for your car is printed on the door jam sticker. That's what you need.

How deep is the remaining tread?

What type of tires are they? Summer? All-season? Names/models would help

How old are they? (date code is stamped into them)

you are kind of answering your own questions

not even same tyre brand.

you mean left and right, or front and back? all four?

one has a side cut.

that doesn't affect traction, but depending how deep it is, could pose a serious hazard.

You can't expect cheap (probably Chinesium?) mismatched tires to provide good traction. That's especially the case if they are old since rubber hardens with age and the problem is worse with cheap rubber compounds.

Buy yourself a decent set of tires.

I have a very similar car - 09 Matrix (Corolla hatchback). If you're spinning tires on wet roads, yes, they are not safe/good. Spinning tires on takeoff isn't all that dangerous in a low-power front wheel drive car, but it indicates that they won't perform when you brake hard or turn the car to avoid a dumb driver on a wet - or dry - road.

In the size the car takes, decent name brand tires (tyres) by Goodyear, Dunlop, Continental, Michelin are reasonably priced, and a lot cheaper than fixing the crash when cheap tires result in bad braking and turning.

Wet roads reduce static friction, which is required if you want to roll without slipping. Dry roads increase the available static friction force. If your tires are bald, or worse, the steel belts are starting to show, you're way past a tire change. Steel belts and asphalt have an even lower coefficient of static friction than bald tires do. What makes a tire grip the road is a special compound that is only in the tread of the tire, not throughout it.

You should be feeling the opposite if your tires are low. If an owner of a Jeep Wrangler knows what he's doing and he's stuck in sand, he can let air out of the tires to grip the sand better.

Look at your sidewall. The sidewall will clearly say made in China, or whatever the country of origin was where the tire was produced. Change all 4 of them as soon as possible.

Driving on that is extremely dangerous, and it's liable to blow out.
