Used Barely Broken Almost New Toyota

I was pursing several Toyota Dealer websites to understand what certified meant.  And I stumbled upon a trend.

There was one model that kept coming up as USED, with about 500-1500 miles on it within 1-3 months off the lot.  But it came back.

It is being sold USED, but the price is almost as much a NEW, so you aren't really saving any money getting it USED.

Questions that run through my mind:

  • Why was the car returned?
  • Is it a lemon?
  • Is it a horrible car?
  • Could the original owner not afford the payments?
  • And why is it so damn expensive, similar to a new price? Usually car depreciate significantly off the lot. Depreciation doesn't seem to be real when it comes to Dealer pricing of Used Almost New cars.

Is something a miss with Toyota on this model?

Probably finance related. Either that or it was a service loaner at the dealership.

They are expensive because they can be. Toyota makes you pay through your nose for everything. Certified Used are no different. Why lower the price if you can sell it for a higher rate?

most likely original owner couldn't afford the payments or it's a lemon

See if they will let you have a mechanic check it out and maybe try to negotiate the price down.

Typically you will see that on service loaner vehicles. All the dealers use the same models for loaners and when they approach 2k miles they sell them off.

I would be cautious, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. Especially since they are typically willing to negotiate on them.
