Used Volkswagen Jetta 2006 (Private)

A friend of a friend is selling his Volkswagen Jetta 2006. Though 14 years old, according to the friend who sat in it, still pretty good condition. Tires good condition. Rego till next Nov. Mileage approx 180K, for Sydney it's pretty good. To give an idea, my friend's car is 2003 model already 270K mileage 😅
My friend will be having a look when she meets them next Sunday so I can see pictures, videos and ask for if I like it for less than 5000 AUD (my budget). He is the only 2nd owner, selling because he plans to go off-the-grid.

Any particular issues with Jetta 2006? Saw a few comments online disgracing its looks but really appreciate this community's technical views on this matter.

Cheers and thanks for the feedback on my earlier question.

Volkswagen....any year, any model...in a word...NO !

Exception would be a new one with 100% warranty and you could get by without it while its in the shop....that warrants another NO for most folks.

Acutally, obviously the older beetles, and the early 2000s Jetta TDi manuel seems like good car. The TDIs did not have all the emission stuff and the manuals were decent but the pile of junk 2006 model years should be stayed away from at all costs.

The second VW with the most complaints is the 06 Jetta with much higher than avergae electrical, engine, transmission, interior, windows, and brake issues. How please reconsider if he is your friend anymore.

I have a 2006 Jetta TDI sedan with the DSG automatic transmission and as long as it will stay together and running it's a nice car. I don't like the automatic transmission!
But since I'm sorta stuck with it for now I'm being very diligent about maintenance and fortunately, I've found an independent family-owned and operated shop that will do the maintenance without ripping me off like the stealerships and big chains will. http://www.garrettsautomotive.com
I'm taking it in tomorrow for a new timing belt/water pump/serpentine belt replacement and DSG transmission fluid and filter service and a brake fluid flush. It currently has 205,000 miles on it and with the current market being a seller's market it's much better to spend $800 and try to keep it going rather than trying to replace it.
The stealerships want $2,300 to do the same job so I definitely recommend staying as far away from them as possible because they're overcharging their customers big time! I guess this is how VW is trying to recoup their losses from the dieselgate scandle.
If you're stuck with a VW TDI like I am, then I recommend using http://www.idparts.com for your maintenance parts and then finding an independent shop to do the work if you're not able to do it yourself.
After this European car has finished living it's life I know that I won't be buying anything other than a Toyota or a Honda just like Scotty recommends!

In the US parts are scarse, in Europe there are plenty. Here you can't find many Passats and Jettas and Golfs what about in Australia bc here they are money pits of the likes of BMW and Audi. The Jetta from that time were better made then it is now and that is $3500USD. That is NOTHING for a car. No matter what, bring it to a mechanic.

Hy!

I suggest you read this (click there). Do you still think he is your friend?

Good luck.

Please reconsider as the 06 Jetta has the second highest amount of complaints among all VW models and model years.

@kerem-umut-kerem what's the point of your comment?

@g-t
It was to give information to the question asker and since you gave a link about the Jetta I did as well.

If you want a Jetta consider the 2000-2005 Jetta TDI Wagon. That will probably be the most reliable. If you can drive manuel, get a manuel.

I have a 2006 Jetta TDI sedan with an automatic transmission and I previously had the same car with the manual transmission. I don't like the automatic transmission in this car! I had to have the mechatronic unit replaced and only the dealer would work on the transmission. The repair was expensive $2,700.
The headliners in these cars fall apart.
I get 45 - 48 mpg, it drives great and I like the way the cruise control works.

Yes the 2006 and up is pure garbage the autos are horrible in the US the TDI's have all that emission junk the engines fall apart. If I were in lets say Europe, parts would be easier to find and manuel transmission diesel set up would be very reliable.

Stay away from Volkswagen! How do you know it won't start having problems as soon as you buy it from them?! Get a newer and more reliable car for yourself...there are WAY more options to choose from.
