Hi,
Vehicle info
2001 Toyota RAV 4.
Automatic Trans
130k approximately.
Most of the time runs fine. The problem started this summer. Temperatures are almost always in the 90s this time of year. Symptoms as follows.
Start car drive around it's up to full operating temperature. Stop car and go shopping or what ever and the car sits awhile come back to it and restart it's fine.
However if you try and restart only a few minutes later and not giving it time for a cool down it will not run. It will start but stutter the idle speed, and die. Giving it gas won't help. Now if you let it sit for 30 to 45 minutes to cool down it will start up and run no issues.
So far the only common things that seem to be in place during issue is outside temperatures in mid 90s or higher. The check engine light is not on or has been on since the issue started.
No repairs or other changes have been to the vehicle any time near these symptoms starting up.
I can not be guaranteed that this can be recreated at a shop because if the vehicle is inside not in the sun it probably won't happen and if the restart time is too soon or late it won't happen.
Not sure putting it on a shop scan tool would even help. If yes I would pay but I don't want to spend diagnostic money to be told no problem found.
If I need to answer more I will be glad to.
One thing I did try was to do a supposed flood start. Hold accelerator to floor while trying to start. Didn't help.
Hopefully this something common I have not heard about.
Thanks
It sounds like it's flooding out when it's hot. So try my friend Bernie's ATT s fuel cleaner. Just Google. Bernie Albuquerque ATS fuel cleaner and you can find it. Often that will fix it by keeping the injectors from dribbling when it's hot which floods out the engine
Thank You.
I will look for a can tomorrow.
I had other thoughts but don't like to guess.
I killed it.
Next time it happened I pumped trying to get it to stay running.
Now scope at shop shows a short at or near fuel pump. Most likely the pump. Why? Because every car that I have owned over 10 years has ended up needing a fuel pump.
I will update this if not pump. But that will be when tank tank comes out.
Personally I think every vehicle built should have a floor access point to the fuel tank where you can change the unit without removing the tank.
