Would a volvo 440 1996 be a reliable first car?
Seeing as how it's just a couple of years shy of 3 decades old, no.
If you're resourceful and know a least something about cars, maybe, I had a 1994 BMW 540i in 2013-14 on a college kid's budget, but I knew about cars and did pretty much all of my own work. When I got tired of spending $40 a month to keep BMW-specific power steering fluid in the car, I sold it. I have a minor in mechanical engineering. BMW used a V8 engine in the 540i and they squished the power steering rack between the engine and subframe; you had to take the engine out to replace a hose.
Starting out, if you don't have a clue was you're doing, I would pass. You'll pull your hair out driving that as a daily driver, it's 28 years old.
I have some family members that are rolling in 30+ year old Volvo's. But they kinda know what they are doing. As a first car, I would lean towards no. For someone that knows what they are doing, is resourceful with parts, and can maintain it, I lean towards going for it.
Me personally, I am not too familiar with Volvo, so I would lean towards no. If it were a 30+ year old Toyota or Honda, maybe, because I know those cars a little better.
