Hi! For any gas engine with a standard water pump: how can you find out it's actually pumping right?

Assuming you have the correct amount of coolant, I would say if the top of your radiator gets hot and your heater blows hot, that is good evidence for a properly working water pump. If the heater and radiator are lukewarm or cold, and you're not seeing coolant weep from the water pump, or hearing noises from it, I would first suspect the thermostat as the most likely culprit. That is a cheap part, and usually reasonably easy to change out first. But if that's not it, you're out 10 bucks, no harm no foul.
