Scotty,

i have a 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5

I’ve done many repairs on things that have just gotten old. I expect that! When the car is working it’s an awesome car. I bought it with 80,000 miles on it and it now has 208,000. I’m on SS and Can NOT take it to a shop so I’ve done it myself.

Now the case ids driving me nuts!! I come out and start it up and out starts/runs fine. Once it comes up to operating temp, I shut it off it will NOT

start. cranks like a champ but won’t catch. This also happens if I “balk” start it, turning the key to one bump and then releasing the key.

Took it to a shop who said I had a cracked block or head. NO evidence of that at all. All new O2 sensors, cam sensors.

It’s not throwing a code of any kind! I have a fairly decent reader.

pleasepleaseplese HELP!! It’s making me nuts! {black}

Cleaning the throttle body and MAF sensor might be a place to start. Also see the FAQ for diagnosing a no-start condition when the problem occurs.

Have you seen anything suspicious in live data like fuel trims out of whack, etc., that might reveal a problem? (Looking for codes is just the beginning of the diagnostic process.)

I’m just now looking to see what the items in the data stream say. I’ll holler back then!

Throttle body removed, it was filthy. Cleaned it out and reinstalled/reprogrammed it. Still ng

Reading the data stream there doesn’t seem to be anything out of whack.

I have 2 new cam/crank pos sensors, May put a new crank sensor in (put a new one in less than a year ago)

Well here's my two cents worth. I have the same problem with my S10 pickup only it does start hot. However it's very difficult to start it if it's hot and hasn't been run just a minute or two ago or less. Here's what I'm going to try and you might do this too and let's see if we both solve our problems. You know how they tell us we have to clean battery terminals? Well nobody seemed to talk about cleaning the terminals on the starters. I wonder if those get a little corroded from time to time. I have to change the motor mount on my S10 pickup and the process that means taking one of the wires out so I thought why not take them both off and clean the terminals while changing that mount. And I know you don't have to do that and necessarily cuz you might not have a motor mount job or any job that involves removing a starter wire but you do have a starter and I would say take the terminal wires off on the starter end and clean both of the wire ends and clean the terminals on the starter with some water baking soda formula. 25% baking soda in the water solution. Mix it up real good and with it soak the terminals and the cable contacts. Let it sit there for a few minutes and then come back with a wire brush and scrub it all off . See if you can get looking like nice and pretty copper like a fresh treasury printed penny. And then see if you still have trouble with hot starts. That might be all it is. The other thing is you may have to change the starter out altogether. That's what I think we should check.
