Good morning!! My 2005 Yukon's trany is acting up after 285,000 miles. Since prices are ridiculous right now. I have decided to buy an inexpensive commuter car until the prices come down. I have narrowed it to 2.
2001 Toyota Camry XLE V6. 101,997 miles. One owner. No accidents. 4 speed automatic. $4900
2004 Corolla Le. 96,516 miles. One owner. No accidents. Automatic. $6977
What would you recommend? Obviously not seeing the vehicles, and what should I look for as a red flag? Thank you in advance for all you do for us!! You da MAN!
"Obviously not seeing the vehicles"
I would not buy either one of them. Whenever I want to buy a car, I want to see the vehicle in person before I make a final decision.
Thank you for responding. I meant that you guys wouldn't see it. {black} I am going to be looking at them.
Tough choice. Assuming each of the cars checks out, it’s kinda a toss up IMHO. With the V6 you will spend more on gas, but it is cheaper on the onset. With the Corolla, it is more expensive, but with gas prices now a days, you may be able to catch that difference depending on how much you drive.
Obviously the Camry in general is the “better” car, in terms of trim and size. At the same time, this is a commuter car, so the Corolla would fit the bill. I still can’t believe an 18 year old Corolla is going for $7000. Just a year ago, my 14 year old BMW X5 was valued at $8000. Shows the depreciation of such cars. LOL. Crazy huh?
Thank you for responding!! I've been commuting with that Yukon so.... anything will be better on gas!! I know I'm not going to keep it forever. So I think I'm going to go Camry. Should I be looking for any red flags for this year??
The big thing I would look out for is the timing belt. Whether it has been changed, or if it needs changing as part of maintenance. But since it is, TMK, a non interference engine, it really doesn’t matter as much as if it were an interference engine.
TBH, I don’t know if it has one or not. As Toyota was first to move away from them. I can’t remember what years.
Btw, some things that may be there because it is a 20 year old car, oil leaks and transmission oil leaks. It isn’t necessarily a deal breaker, but just be aware, that a 20 year old car may have leaks. And as long as the leaks are maintainable, it should be fine. Just annoying to deal with. If it is a major leak, pass on it.
I would think the Camry would be a more comfortable ride.
Both are $1000 buck or less cars and you haven't even seen them so.... Neither one!
