What causes a radiator to blow?

Hey everyone, my mom has a 2010 Lexus LX 570, with 140,000mi, and recently she noticed that the engine temp was gradually increasing. Hence, she shut off the car and immediately realized there was a liquid dripping under the car. She then has it towed to a mechanic and he said that the radiator blew. So $1400 (they replaced the radiator the hose and the thermostat) later the car runs perfectly fine. There is no loss of coolant there is no more overheating and the engine just purrs. So my question is what caused this to happen? As always thanks for the responses!

And kudos to your mom for monitoring the temperature gauge and knowing how to respond in order to prevent damage to the engine.👍

Well, generally one of two things either. You have too much pressure built up in the engine and it blows the radiator . Or it's just old age because the radiators are made out of plastic and aluminum and they're just crimped on the plastic to the aluminum and the plastic gets old and degrades and becomes brittle then they blow
