I know an old man who is like a third grandfather to me. He had one of these little things, and he loved it. He only had to change the oil and the tires maybe twice in the 10 years he had that thing. he had the 1984 and 1/2. i have been looking for one of these, and do you think i should buy one?
Well, I wouldn't trade a Tundra in on it. Tiny, fun around town, scary slow on a freeway, too old to be a daily driver.
I didnt say that i would trade a tundra, I would like to have one as a backup vehicle in rural Iowa
Oh,, sure, there it would make sense. Great for running around the fields, rural roads, hunting, etc. Here's a site that can help you find out what to look for. I believe that Chevy sold them as Geos https://repairpal.com/1990-suzuki-samurai/problems
Those were excellent cars that are extremely collectible and are a collectors item. On addition to that the Suzuki Samurai also has a cult following which means that you usually have to pay through the nose for one. If you are ok with the price then go ahead.
Cool cars, but they couldn't keep up with the American lifestyle. When they were sold as Geo Trackers and had 3 bangers, the engines overheat after long highway cruises.
I'd love to have one to knock around.
It would be an OK backup. They aren't particularly nice (or safe) to drive. But they have a cult following in off-road circles so parts and aftermarket support are better than you'd think for a 40-year-old Suzuki.
I'm not gonna link, but Nathan Adlin from TFL has put up a few videos in the past few years about what it's like to drive a Samurai, if you are seriously considering one.
Thanks!
In retrospect, they were cool little cars. Just know their limitations.
They’re good cars, it’s hard to find one in good shape though.
Buy one for what? Owners swear by them and they are pretty neat cars from what I here and they are farely reliable. Much better than other North American spec Suzukis of the time.
Across the pond in the UK, they dubbed it a "hair dressers" car. They were ok back in their day. Think the RoadKill guys put a 440 big block in one. Called it super sammy.
If I remember right, they were decent enough cars for the time. However, I think they had rollover issues. If you can get one cheap that is in decent shape, go for it but just don't do anything that might cause a rollover.
