Hello I have a 2008 lexus es 350 with 164k miles.  the transmission went out shortly after I purchased it (seems previous owner drove it hard). I am not in an economic position to entirely replace the car and quite like it so im planning to replace to tranny. I was looking at a unit with 219k miles for 550$ and a unit with 111k miles for 1200$. What unit should I choose? there firm on the price for both,  thanks.

that's more miles than you have on your car. This is replacing a dead transmission with one that's about to die.

111k miles for 1200$

plus installation right?

money's tight.

well this is gambling with your money. Be ready for disappointment.

Luxury cars aren't the best thing for someone on a budget.

Yes that's the price before installation. And yeah your correct quite a gamble, but ironically where I am the lexus was way cheaper and lower mileage than comparable camrys and Hondas. People seem to think there cars are made of gold.

you are talking about up front cost. I'm talking about long term ownership cost.

That's fair I was told to go for the lower cost lower mileage "fancy Toyota", over the 230k mile accords and camrys that were 2-3k more. I've heard mostly good things about this car being the camry platform.

they were good cars when new. It's just that when they get old they start costing a lot of money. A 230k mile Accord wouldn't be much better. This is just what happens when buying old cars. You have to inspect them and test drive them thoroughly. Having the maintenance history is a big plus.

Yeah well I should mention I had this car inspected by my mechanic prior to purchase. At the time apparently everything came back good. It clearly was not so probably won't be going back to them. Either way I'm tired of hitching rides and watching it sit and rot.

I should add I can't really afford a factory remanufactured unit I'm a college student so money's tight.
