I heard a new term, new to me. Smash Box. It was used in context with a transmission.

So I’d like to ask the old timers.

What is a Smash Box?

You mean "slush box"?

It's slang for torque converter.

Perhaps I misheard it. Thank you!

You might mean "crash box". It's a term used to describe a manual transmission without synchronizers where you need to double-clutch in order to shift without "crashing" (grinding) the gears.

Transmission sychros were invented by Earl A. Thompson in 1918 and first used by Cadillac in 1928.

That might be the term I heard! It was in the context of synchros. Thank you for the information. I have never tried one of these, it would be interesting to try, but I doubt I can get my hands on one seems it seems so obscure.
