What's the point of the vacuum system?

Hi Scotty,

Why do you need a vacuum system if you already have spark, air and fuel?  How does it work? What makes it suck air?  What happens when it dies or springs a leak, and why would it make the car fail if the vacuum system fails?   And how do you maintain it?

Thanks and love from Canada, you are the man.

Matt

Vacuum is already there. It's a byproduct. The combustion engine is just a fancy pump. When the piston moves down on the intake stroke, it's sucking in the air/fuel mixture like a syringe. If you don't push the accelerator pedal, the thottle plate which allows air in will be closed. The piston trying to suck against this closed throttle valve creates a vacuum.  This vacuum is very "low-cost" source of energy, comes in a useful form, and has many benefits like holding power.
