What's wrong with my mother's Volkswagen?

Topic starter

My mother's 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan has 116,007 miles on it, and the oil light keeps coming on even after getting scheduled oil changes done. The car keeps dying because the battery keeps getting drained for some reason. And on top of that, the EPC and check engine light is on. I think the EPC systems is messing something up, because the car's rpms go up when her foot isn't on the gas pedal. She did attempt to put in some gas station oil that she bought, which might have caused the EPC light to come on, but she had that flushed out and let a jiffy lube do the job. But the system is still acting up along with the battery problem. What could possibly be wrong? Is the vehicle worth keeping and fixing?

A lot of things.

Sell that junk ASAP and avoid buying another German vehicles.

Lots of things.

Connect a good scanner that can talk with VWs many computer modules,

Since this is a VW and it's "technologically advanced" a regular OBD2 scanner may not do.

And let's see what are the issues that the car's computers see with the vehicle...

battery problem

There's a special tool that allows you to diagnose that, the CarWizzard has a video on that -

without that tool (diagnosing manually) it's going to cost you a lot.

Is the vehicle worth keeping and fixing?

Let's see the codes first, there's no way to tell you that without even seeing the VW specific codes.

If you could scan the car, and get the codes, that would help decipher what is going on.

Tool is called 'AMP Hound', google for that.

For finding what is wrong, you should scan it (obd-2 scanner) or have it scanned (but avoid the stealers).

This link gives info about EPC (VW-specific):
