Based on Scotty’s recent video, if you had to choose one, what is your favorite engine configuration and why?

And I’d like to hear from newer members too!

Granted, they all have advantages and disadvantages.  But if you had to pick just one engine configuration as your favorite, which would you pick?

Bonus question too, what’s your least favorite engine configuration, and why?

lol how did I know this post would be by you

the answer is I don't care. I don't choose vehicles based on engine shape because it doesn't matter. It just has to have enough power for my needs.

oh yah and 99% of us will never encounter a 'W' or rotary engine.

i have had a mix of engine configs from modified small block V8's, customised turbo 6's, non standard rotary and bog stock 4 banger fwd. my RX4 mazda surprised alot of people because of the power to weight ratio. honda was a nice family type cruiser. small block V8's simply torque monsters for their capacity, the best sleeper config was a 1974 datsun 240K with L series 2.4 six which i turbo'd and injected with a close ratio rally box another fun power to weight ratio set up. i prefer rwd as apposed to fwd, efi or carb does not bother me as i have experience with both. efi in simple terms is a refinement of fuel/air ratio and delivery.i do like playing around with forced induction although it can be expensive like anything else if it all goes pair shaped.

Haha. Yeah. It’s my MO.

thanks, @scotty_64. I think you meant to use the "Your Answer" box at the bottom.

sorry.... got a bit lazy. i can do a cut and paste and put in in an answer box if you like

it's ok just try to remember.

I don't really care like Joe but I would like to stick to Inline and V engines, especially more interesting designs like the Inline 5 or Inline 6.

I hate Inline 3 cylinder engines (not really configuration rather a specific engine type) especially if it has cylinder deactivation to make it a 2 cylinder engine because of how they fall apart and how cheap the idea is.

"cylinder deactivation to make it a 2 cylinder engine"
which car is that?

@mountainmanjoe
The Ford 1.0 and 1.5 I3 engines and maybe more.

do you know which cars have it?

I believe the Fiesta, Focus, Escape, and Ecosport (of course with the ecoboost 3 cylinder engines) and a few others in other markets should have it.

my goodness that's a tiny engine

@mountainmanjoe
And the fact that overseas they put these I3 engines into the Transit Courier and the Mondeo seems too cheap for me, because that is the case. And yeah that is a tiny engine. At least the block is cast iron. Yes, finally some qualit- Er-- Nevermind, it has a timing belt. The overall size is the same as A4 paper. And this was awarded engine of the year in 2017. I am confused of the logic Ford went forth with this engine besides the fact that they went chea-, my bad I meant to say "affordable" and "value" driven.

those awards don't mean anything. It's just marketing for hire.

definetly, in fact I would nominate that engine for one of the WORST engines of the decade.

Fav:  V - good platform for making more power

Least Fav:  Rotary - poor fuel economy

I feel like we've had a post regarding this topic already...where I said each engine type/configuration had its own purpose.

But my all-time favorite is still the rotary. It just amazes me...a simple and compact engine with a good amount of power.

lol, by Kaizen of course just over a month ago. At least my answers are consistent.

I wasn’t too familiar with W, so I added it on!

rotaries here in oz get a bad rap due the "dickhead" driver/owner factor. i can recall being pulled over by the cops one night when cruising and educating 3 cops about the ins and outs of a rotary engine.at the end of it all they said if i was to do a runner they would of let me go, i said to them i have no reason to do that and besides no matter how fast i can go in any car it will not beat the speed of a 2 way radio. after that these 3 cops would pull me over randomly just to chill and chat about cars lol.

@kaizen
Ah I see. At least newer members will be able to see this one. I doubt the new people are using the search feature on this website lol. I just happened to remember a similar post which it turns out was also by you lol.

Normal inline 4 because of reliability and maintenance costs.

The favourite? Radial one.

That rotary is quite fascinating.

a german design made more reliable by mazda. what many people dont know is GM had ideas of building a rotary powered corvette and other large car manufacturers had some interest in a rotary engine at some stage

I mean radial, not rotary

Oh! Radial. Gotcha.
