Hello all,
So my 2005 Toyota Matrix AWD with 205k miles is making some noise, sounds like the right side, I would guess rear.
This car has a rusty, patched together muffler first off, so this is why I am questioning the noise. The noise seems to happen mostly when I am at some speed, when the road has a curve to the left. It is a sound that I can best describe as having noisy all terrain tires. At first I thought it was the patchy muffler grumbling, but it is pretty consistent on the left hand turns, and if the road straightens out, it may keep making the noise for a bit.
I have only had one wheel bearing go bad on me, and I did not have noise that tipped me off, it was actually the brake pedal, so not too familiar with the noise.
What do you pros think, wheel bearing or something else? If it is a bearing, any suggestion of where to get one, or just the local parts store?
Thanks so much!
Why not jack up the car and check the wheel bearings for looseness and roughness?
That was my next move, but I haven't worked with bearings, so trying to get an idea if that may be the issue. Thanks!
If they're making noise you should be able to feel it spinning wheels by hand. Also if you have front bearings worn the sound will change when you turn the steering wheel left and right as the load on the bearings change. If all else fails you can use one of those noise detection gadgets that Scotty has demonstrated in his videos.
It'll most likely be the CV joint or bearing. You'll have to jack it up and check.
