[Solved] When to do the first engine oil, and transmission oil change?

4 Days ago I bought a 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage ES. I have drove it 400 miles already. Do you think it is a good idea to do it's 1st oil change at 500 miles? I use fully synthetic.

Also, is there a "break in" time period for the CVT? Like, instead of changing it at 15,000 miles, should I change it at 7,000?

Any metal shavings that were in the oil got caught by the oil filter upon initial startup. You don't need to "break in" a vehicle anymore. A good mix of city driving, highway driving, slow and brisk accelerations are fine. Don't let the tachometer hit the red line. My '79 Pontiac didn't require a break-in period, even back in the day.

I wouldn't bother, personally. You can do it if it makes you sleep at night.

Do whatever your owner's manual says to. 15k miles sounds more reasonable than every 7,000 miles. To me, that's excessive.

Not every 7,000 miles all the time. But for the 1st change?

Also, I did floor the accelerator a few times on it. Twice was when going up a mountain. One at 4,000 feet, and once at 7,000 feet. To see how much power it has at higher elevation. At 7,000 feet, the engine makes 62 HP. It seems to be plenty.

And on the way back home, I was going the same speed as someone getting on the freeway, so I floored it again, and kept flooring it for about 20 seconds. I went from about 55 MPH, to 75 MPH up a hill. But it doesn't reach red line when floored. Red line is 6,200 RPM. And it goes to about 5,800-6,000.

That's awfully close to red lining. You shouldn't be flooring the pedal at all.

Luckily it wasn't much. It still averaged 50 MPG for the entire tank. Besides those 3 accelerations, and also it sitting at ~3,500 RPM going about 35-40 MPH up a mountain, the rest of the accelerating is about 1,500-2,000 RPM in the city, or at stop signs.

3,500 RPM might seem like a lot, but keep in mind, this is a 78 HP engine, going up a mountain at high elevation.

Overall, even though it is the worst new reviewed car, I am very happy with it. Very simple looking to repair, and it gets 50 MPG with my pretty light foot.

What does the owner's manual say?

Mechanic's opinion: Car Care Nut

It says 7,500-10,000 miles for the engine, and 30,000-50,000 miles for the transmission fluid. Nothing for "break in", which seems to not be a thing anymore.

well, the most you have to lose is the price of new oil & filter

Well, it would be about $18.00 for the oil and filter, if I get a pack of 4 of the oil. I might as well do the 1st engine oil change early. If it makes it last longer, that's good. The filter is $4. And it only takes 3.2 quarts.

500 miles is way too early. I'd say change oil every 5,000 miles on that and it should be fine.

Your fluid don't wear out much at 7,000 miles. Mitsubishi recommends change every 30,000 miles on that.
