I’m in a pickle and can’t seem to choose which used car to buy!
Im in the New braunfels TX area and all cars are automatic and all look in good exterior and interior shape
Now I would like to know which car has the best chance of lasting me the longest?
-Option 1:2010 Lexus IS 250
190,000 mile ( said to be mostly highway)
1 owner
$7500
-Option 2: 2014 Toyota Corolla LE Eco Plus
108,497miles
A/C seems to goes out occasionally
1 owner (added regular oil change)
$7,500 cash only
-Option 3: 2011 Honda Accord EX
114,000 miles
Unknown how many owners
$7,500
I would get the Corolla if the mechanic checks it.
Well hey sounds good I’ll go by and check them out this weekend hope for the best
Lexus IS's have a long long history of premature inner front tire wear. The front tires often have to be replaced every 10-15K miles. Lexus says its "normal". Its only normal as part of a defect that Lexus refuses to address or even admit.
You can improve it somewhat but have to replace front bushings, and it likely will only improve, not solve the problem.
Google it and its also extensively discussed on the Lexus forums.
Is that only in the front wheel drive models or is it both RWD AND AWD models?
Both and you can't even rotate the tires because the front an back rims are different sizes on the IS's. A 2010 may have the same size rims front and back, I'm not sure if that year is staggered or not?
If you want long life and low maintenance, get the Corolla.
I'm by no means saying the IS250 or Honda are bad vehicles. I'm just saying that, in my opinion, of these three exact cars the Corolla would probably be the best choice.
Ok so I’ve narrowed it down between the Lexus and Corolla and going to check them this weekend!
Unfortunately, I would not go with any of them. The Lexus IS will cost more to maintain/repair moving forward, especially since it is already at almost 200,000 miles. The issue with the inner tire wear above that joec mentioned - if the issue is widespread - would mean new tires frequently, and that can get annoying fast.
The Honda Accord EX is the 2.4L I4 and that model year was part of the 2008-2012 susceptible to oil burning, which was only pronounced if the previous owner did not religiously change the oil every 3,000-5,000 miles. And here you are saying it had previous owners, which is scary because you don’t know how it was taken care of. See my past write up below on that issue: it’s a shame too because the EX came with a manual transmission as standard so a 4 cylinder with manual would be ideal for longevity:

Finally, the Corolla seems the most attractive of those 3 however the 2014 Le ECO Plus came with a different engine and transmission than the rest of the Corollas in the lineup. The engine (2ZR-FAE) had issues with its Valvematic system, and we list it below on the year/engine combo Corolla to avoid along with issues with the CVT transmission (which the LE
ECO came with): the other 2 trims (L, S) did not come with the CVT and the other 3 trims (L, LE, and S) did not come with that engine (with Valvematic technology). The L and S are also better options as they came offered in manual and 4-speed AT only (but at least those were proven). Plus that one you are looking at with the AC going out - it’s not clear what the root cause is and worst cause looking at an expensive repair bill. Also, realize that CVT in the Corolla was first used around that model year, so you know there will be some growing pains; worst case, looking at potential CVT replacement as they seem weaker than their 4-speed AT and their manual.

Oh thank you so much!! Now I don’t have to waste a weekend knowing what I know now! You are such a help cause I’ll be honest I felt a gut feeling about the Corolla but wasn’t sure what it was, but you came in and showed me what was happening! Thanks again looks like I’ll be looking for a Corolla excluding the eco, 06s and 09s and avoid very old Lexus unless they are 2007 ( those are the ones that don’t burn oil right?) thank you again
