Back in February of 2015, I pulled out of my driveway and onto my street. I hadn't gone four feet when the passenger side lower ball joint snapped. After thinking about it for awhile, it seemed that, considering my car's age and mileage, my best option was to just rebuild the front end of my car. Made no sense to replace just one ball joint just to potentially have to replace something else six months later. Replaced upper and lower control arms on both sides, stabilizer bar links, pitman arm, idler arm, etc., etc.
Back in June of this year, I go to grease the front end (something I have done on a yearly basis since rebuilding the front end) only to find that one of my stabilizer bar links was snapped in two. Replaced both bar links. Now, on Friday December 3rd, I was driving down the road and my driver’s side lower ball joint snapped. Boy, does that feel familiar.
This is the second suspension part that has failed since the front end rebuild back in 2015. All the parts that were used in the rebuild were made by MOOG, a division of Federal Mogul and all were purchased from RockAuto. The rebuild was done at 158731 miles. Current mileage is approximately 231,000. Approximately 72,269 miles on the MOOG parts.
As I am not a mechanic, when I finished the rebuild in 2015, I had a mechanic friend of mine check my work. He said it all looked good. Once I got his verification, I had the front end aligned. So, at least I know that I hadn’t botched the rebuild.
That was almost seven years ago. Now I am having part failures. I was under the impression that MOOG suspension parts were reliable products. Looks like I may have been mistaken. As it looks like I may have to do another rebuild, at least partially, can someone here PLEASE tell me who makes reliable suspension parts. For lower ball joints, I am currently looking into AC Delco part #45D2223 from RockAuto, or Auto Zone’s Valuecraft part #VFA2101. Don’t want to spend too much as the car is getting a little old.
I know that RockAuto has lower ball joints for as low as $5.99 each (SKP brand part #SK8685), but I just don’t trust a brand that I don’t know, especially one that cheap, for ball joints. I did use the SKP brand however for the stabilizer bar links, maybe that was a mistake.
I know that these parts weren’t meant to last forever and I don’t expect them to. However, the original parts were in there since the vehicle was new. Of course, I am just assuming this as I have no way to really know. But since I only drive about 10,000 miles a year, I would think that they might last a little longer than they have.
Just for reference, my car is a 1997 Ford Crown Victoria LX. My previous car was a 1993 Crown Victoria and I never had suspension parts issues with it. It had roughly 135,000 miles on it when I bought it and nearly 300,000 miles when I scrapped it. Roughly 165,000 miles with no suspension parts issues. Are MOOG parts just not reliable any more or are my expectations just unrealistic?
Maybe I should just bite the bullet on this one and redo the entire front end with Motorcraft parts?
Any suggestions, ideas, or opinions are appreciated.
Moog is one of those leading parts brands that was excellent a long time ago but unfortunately their quality has gone way down in recent years. The best bet is going to be OEM parts if available.
Thanks for your reply.
They are available from RockAuto, MOTORCRAFT #MCSOE190145, but at $236.79 per pair. Maybe I should just try another cheaper brand like ACDelco or Valuecraft. Don't want to spend too much as I plan to scrap the car sometime next year anyway. Bought it in either April or May of 2012 and once it has lasted me ten years, I figure that's enough.
OEM is pricey, but they do last.
So you got 6yr/73,000 mi out of the Moogs on a fairly heavy car. It's not great, but it's not THAT bad, or unheard of.
I'm just surprised that they are snapping. Usually they make quite a racket before they get to that point.
Do you live in the rust belt?
Thanks for your reply.
Yeah, that particular ball joint was making some occasional noise for a little while before it snapped. So, it wasn't totally unexpected I guess. Just wish I could have gotten a few more miles out of them since I'm planning to scrap the car sometime next year anyway. Ten years out of a car that old isn't too bad I guess. Time for a change though. May try something a little different next time. Maybe a Mercury Grand Marquis. LOL.
Fords have awful suspension. I've had nothing but problems with them.
Balljoints on the Cougar also didn't last very long.
Glad you were not going fast at all when it snapped.
I am in the process of switching out a few parts, sway bar links, and inner and outer tie rods. OEM for my Lexus GX470 would be over $400, moog is about $60. I figure I won't get as far as OEM, but if I get 75k safe miles, I will be pretty happy from the tie rods. I think with moog, you really got to watch where they are made, and if they appear to be poor quality.
So far my sway bar links are made in mexico, not a great sign, but at least they have zerk fittings, that makes me feel a bit better. The outer tie rod ends are made in the usa, and also have zerk fittings, that makes me feel a lot better. Still waiting on the inner tie rods, hoping for USA or Japan made.
Do I expect them to last as long, no. I have painted them for rust protection, and plan to hit them with fluid film or similar before winter, and make sure they are greased each oil change. Hopefully that will make them last a good bit longer, if nothing else, they were very cheap.
Glad to know that yours gave you an indication that they were failing, that would be really bad to hear that their parts just snap out of the blue.
Thanks for your reply.
Yeah, my wife had just mentioned going out to eat at a restaurant in the opposite direction we had just came from. Was in the process of slowing down to turn around when it snapped. So, wasn't going very fast at all. Maybe it was applying the brake that made it snap, who knows. While taking it all apart, I noticed that my brake pads are due for a change also so, will be doing them as well. Yeah, they are the Auto Zone Duralast with the lifetime warranty. Of course, made by Wagner, also a Federal Mogul brand. LOL.
Moog.
Sorry, you are correct. Moog, not MOOG. Was looking on RockAuto’s (or is it Rockauto's?) site while I was typing the post. All parts brands are shown in their search with all capitol letters. Was not paying attention, my bad.
No Big.
LOL!
The synthesizer dude! Joe your killin' me here. LOL!
I was wondering when someone was going to bring that up. LOL.
At least we now know how old we all are!
@mmj OMG It’s been AGES since I’ve seen this..
You actually saw this? {pear}:laughingoutloud:
The first time, I only heard it on the radio. I remembering seeing it on YouTube a loooong time ago.
