How come some automakers lie about some aspects such as reliability on commercials? I.e, in 2019, Chevrolet claimed that they were the most reliable brand; but they removed it because it was false.
Everyone connected with selling motor vehicles lies. For example, Ford tells everybody every year that the F150 is the best selling truck in America. What they don't tell you is that Ford pays about $4 million a year to the FTC in false advertising fines for saying this. OK?
what is the actual best selling truck?
GM actually sells the most trucks in North America when you add Chevrolet and GMC together.
That is correct, Day Walker.
that must be a very profitable lie
Can this have serious consequences to the automaker if the lie is actually revealed?
well the lie was revealed, and they're still doing it so ... not too serious
Does the government know about automakers lying? If so, then shouldn’t they give the brands a penalty or a fine?
The 'F' in FTC stands for 'Federal". It is the government. Read again what Doc said. He answered the question about fines.
well to sell more cars of course
At the end of the day, they will pretty much say anything to sell cars. Being a dealer, I know a lot of places that intentionally have misleading ads, promos, etc. that are designed just to get people in the door.
I don't know if any of you have ever received one, but a popular deal to do is to mail a flyer out with a key blank attached that says to come to the dealership and if your key starts the car, you win. In fact, none work and the actual keys are in the sales manager's desk the whole time.
A big reason I started my dealership was to do things differently and run an honest place where we didn't do all the games, gimmicks, etc. I know I have a lot of repeat customers just based off of their customer service experience.
But yes, marketing departments in all industries are always looking for ways to make their products stand out and seem better than the rest. If that means stretching the truth, or outright lying and having to pay fines, as long as the rewards are worth it, they will.
