Why do vehicles lock up?

Topic starter

Many different vehicles tend to lock up, Scotty! I was wondering if there's a difference in reasons that vehicles lock up? One example would be the steering wheel and brakes locking up while driving. Or the other example that most people are familiar with is, the brakes locking up while driving! And if there's a way to fix this?

I'm really not sure what you're getting at. In over a half century of driving and car ownership I have never had a vehicle "lock up" on me or known it to happen to anyone I know.

I'd say if and when something like that happens it would primarily be due to excess wear caused by poor maintenance and not taking care of small problems before they become big ones. The "fix"  would be to keep up with necessary maintenance and repairs.

what seems to be the problem with your vehicle? Please provide as much detail as possible.

what? the steering wheel doesn't get locked up.

the brakes locking up while driving

basic physics.

great, now:

Now with the basic understanding of what's normal force, what's friction, how brakes work, what's static vs. kinetic friction, etc.

Great now you can look into oversteer and understeer and how that happens, and afterwards, the physics of drifting

I had the brake calipers seize in my old 98 f-150. They did not fully "lock" but I could tell that I was having to press the gas more to get moving. When I stopped and felt the rims, the right side had seized. Those were known for the brake lines attached to the caliper coming apart on the inside. In hindsight, I should have replaced those lines earlier, it was on my short list.

My 98' 4Runner locked up the right caliper when I was driving down the road. Or I should say, it was braking pretty hard.
