Why does my transmission "release"and let my engine redline, then slam the clutch?

I have a 2005 toyota matrix XR AWD With an auto tranny, 133k miles. When im roadtrip driving and i need to accelerate up a hill (70 or 80mph) i drop the transmission out of overdrive and floor it... once the engine hits 53‐5500 rpm, it sounds like transmission lets go, and the engine revvs high, until the transmission slams the clutch back down and i let off out of terror... what could cause this?

It doesn't do this in 1st or 2nd gear, just 3rd.

AND  sometimes coming out of overdrive, it just shifts hard.  HELP!

Run an enhanced diagnostics scan and see if there's a problem with the transmission solenoid. The symptoms are consistent with that possibility.
