[Solved] Why Don't Modern Cars Require Tune Ups?

Hi Scotty,

I was recently going through maintenance schedules for many of my family's vehicles (Acuras, Fords, Hyundai) between model years 2022 and 2023. However I didn't see in the maintenance schedule for any of these vehicles (all modern Acuras, Fords, and Hyundais 2022-2023) for a tune up (like what they used to do in older cars)

Can you explain why this is? I'm very curious about this.

Because modern cars don't run open loop using ignition points and carbs that need frequent fiddling with, and spark plugs in late model cars can last 100K miles or more. In the old days you'd need to do a tuneup every 10K to 12K miles to keep a car running right.

because:

fuel injection did away with all the monkeying with carburettors

computer timing did away with monkeying with distributors

hydraulic lifters did away with adjusting valves

exotic metals means spark plugs last much longer than before.

detergent in gasolines and oils means less cleaning

and modern metallurgy means it's easier to put specialized alloys where they need to be to reduce wear.

simply put - technological progress, mass manufacturing, automation and economies of scale.

@imperator ok, thank you for the info!
