Why is my Car's A/C not blowing cold efficiently?

Hi Scotty,

2005 Mercury Grand Marquis GS (121,000 Miles)

I'm trying to learn and understand the basics of vehicles. I don't know how to self-diagnose but I do have my suspicions.

My car blows cold for some time, then blows warm. It does this frequently.

Looking into my AC compressor clutch, it engages then disengages 5-10 seconds while setting it to MAX A/C in 74 F degrees weather (Not sure if that's normal). My suspicions

1.Low on refrigerant

2.Worn out clutch

Do you have some advice or second opinions on what could cause this intermittent temperature change in my A/C system?

Thank you very much

Best Regards,

Lofi

It's likely low on refrigerant. That typically causes rapid compressor cycling since the suction side pressure will drop below the threshold of the low-pressure cutoff switch. The problem is best handled by a mechanic if you're not familiar with working on AC systems. (It's all too easy to make a real mess of things.)

Hi Guys,

Quick Update about my A/C system:

Car was low on refrigerant, so I had it checked for any leaks and got it refilled. Was told there weren't any leaks (Great). It works great for the most part now, but at very few occasions, I find that my A/C will blow a tad bit warmer for a a minute, then go straight back to freezing air. Starting from 38F then jump up to around 55F.  Had refrigerant levels checked again and it's still filled up. Any thoughts on what else could be the issue?

Best Regards,

Jason
