I have a 2006 BMW 325XI, 6 speed automatic. I bought it as the third owner, and it currently has 248,000 miles. It’s been maintained immaculately, almost everything in the engine (radiator, alternator, thermostat, hoses, ac compressor, etc) has been replaced and it’s been serviced at the same shop every 5,000 mls it’s whole life. Only issue is that if I put my foot to the floor, the car immediately gets stuck in gear and revs to redline, but with no power to the wheels. Only way to stop is to pop it in neutral and back down. Only on one occasion did it get stuck in gear after I put it back in drive, it was stuck in 3rd until I got home and let it sit a while. My remedy has been to drive like a granny, but I need this car to last me through one more year of college. Do you think it’ll make it?
Clearly, there is a transmission problem. I would have it checked out by a pro for some real, useful information.
That is hard to tell. With only a year needed I would baby it and give it a try.
I wouldn't put the "pedal to the metal" like that if it gets stuck in a low gear. Sounds like there's a problem in the transmission and beating on it like that will only make it worse. My 1999 Ranger would get stuck in overdrive on the highway, I got the overdrive gears back from the shop when I had the transmission rebuilt and the gears had metal shavings in them that was binding them up. That could be the problem with yours. If you want it to last, baby it. It will cost you quite a sum of money to fix that X-Drive transmission, or even junkyard swap it.
