Hi I was doing my first head gasket replacement on my 98 Eclipse spyder and accidently took off the timing belt without marking the lower half where the crank is. I had set the car to TDC and have several marks on my cam sprocket. So my questions is if my marks perfectly line up on the cam sprocket will the rest of the belt line up correctly on all of the other gears? Or it is possible that one of the tooth's can be off.
Once you set the belt, turn the engine over with a ratchet on the crank bolt and no plugs installed. You will be glad you did! If it binds to a stop, valves hitting and you need to recheck
Thanks for the helpful tip I will definitely try this out before starting the engine.
Sounds good but was it TDC for #1?? What engine do you have?
Examine the lower half. There may be marking on the gear, like a line, that indicate the correct direction to be lined up. I recommend googling for the diagram of your engine.
I know doe my Honda Accord 1999, there were three gears that needed to be aligned perfectly. And each time I installed, I had it off by a tooth on one of the gears. Luckily, after some time, I got them all lined up. You got this.
Thanks for the responses and encouragement I appreciate it. Also yes I have piston 1 at TDC. I have a 2.4L 4g64 in my 98 Eclipse spyder gs.
