Hi Scotty.

Question in Canada as you already know our WInters are Harsh.
Sometimes i have kids in the car so while filling up gas i keep the Car running.
Is there any disadvantage to not turning the car off while filling up ?

Disadvantages include:

1. Flash fires

2. Explosions

3. Burns

4. Death

I don't recommend it.

Usually the employees are too lazy to say anything, but gas stations prohibit idling while filling up. Look up and you might see a sign saying so.

I just looked it up, and
"In the USA, the prohibition is included in the national fire code which is incorporated into most if not all local jurisdiction codes."
But besides that, it's just not worth the risk. Not to mention making everyone around you breath your exhaust unnecessarily.

Canada too. max penalty $50K fine and/or 1 year in jail

I see a good handful of people do it in Florida. I've even seen them do it while I'm pumping gas for my car-and I have my vehicle turned off. DO NOT ever do this.

Do not leave your car running while filling up. You can end up setting yourself, your car, and your surroundings on fire. Hell, I can't believe you are doing this with kids in the car, god damn.

and don't get in and out of your vehicle either. You charge up static electricity that way.

It used to be pretty common years ago to see cars sporting conductive rubber straps touching the ground to discharge static electricity. Usually the same cars would also have curb feelers installed. A quick search shows antistatic straps to still be available. (I have no idea whether those actually work or not, never tried them.)

well the strap might prevent the vehicle from building up a charge, but what about your body?

I'm sure that the kids/passengers will survive without the vehicle heater running while pumping gas. Anyway, I've seen people smoking while pumping gas also. I guess some people have a death wish.

If you ever come to the US, I absolutely would not leave the car running, the keys in the car, or the kids unattended.

This may not be an issue in Canada, however in the US there are many cities experiencing drive offs by thieves at gas stations.

And they don't care who's in the car at the time...
