Wrist Pin Knock ?? on my MR2 Spyder with 140k

My 2002 MR2 with 140,000 miles recently developed a knock when the engine is over 1800 RPM and under load. It gets quieter after the car fully warms up.

A local mechanic said it's a wrist pin and since it's not that bad, I should go ahead and drive it until I am ready to do a rebuild.

I am pretty sure he diagnosed it by the sound only. What else could it be and how can I check?

I drive the car about 3000 miles a year.

It could be a rod bearing but before you replace anything, find the noise first.
