I really enjoy your channel - it's become my go to and I have learnt a lot.

I'm considering a 2006 Lexus RX 300 with a V6 1MZ-FE 3.0L engine that has only done 122k kilometers (75k miles).

I read that this engines exhaust camshafts are driven by a timing belt, while the exhaust camshafts are driven by gears. The valve adjustment is recommended every 60-80k miles - so it is due for this.

Have you got any tips or advice on changing the timing belt and adjusting or at least checking the valves in case I need an expert to do it? I have tools and some mechanical aptitude so am willing to take this on myself.

Thanks.

You need to change the timing belt since these engines are interference. I would not advise to do it yourself if you have not done this before.

There is a pretty good YouTube video on the timing belt replacement. Does not look too hard, but there will be no joy in Mudville if any of the gears are even one tooth off when you put the new belt on. Regardless of who does it, you want to replace the water pump as well. I just bought a 2003 RX300 with 169000 miles. The valves have never been adjusted, runs like a clock.

Thanks for the info - I will look for that vid.
I have replaced a timing chain on an old Mazda and have done a couple of head jobs on Jap cars as well but these were on older vehicles so not as much grief if I screwed up.
Thankfully I didn't.
Good to hear about the valve clearance too. I have done valve adjustments on motorcycles but not with shims so at least if I check and they are in spec, then I can leave them be.

If you have some issues between the job, then you need to tow your car to a mechanic and most charge you more. At the end of the day, it is your choice.
