| The p0420 code has been discussed quite a few times here, so you may want to use the site search function and see the troubleshooting section of the site FAQ. While that code commonly refers to a failed catalytic converter there are other potential causes that should be explored. See the following: As far as where Bank 1 is located, that is the first bank of cylinders - the only bank of cylinders if you have an inline engine. | |||||

| You did not state the model year of your car. It sounds like your mechanic may have been throwing parts at the problem rather than engaging in deeper diagnostics. Here are some possible causes of p0420 and as well as suggested diagnostic procedures: Be sure that your electrical system is basically OK, battery and alternator in good condition and battery terminals not corroded. Voltage problems can cause all kinds of spurious problems in modern cars. | |||||

| 1. Is there a question? If so a clear, concise description of your car problem belongs in the body of your post. There appears to be a partial attempt in the tags with most of it cut off since that's the wrong place. About the only intelligible part is "P0420". If you search for information on that code you will find there are a number of possible causes including, but not limited to, bad catalytic converter. 2. The title line should be used for a short description of your topic, not your vehicle description. (Title edited to reflect the OBD2 code found in the tags.) 3. For some reason, your browser is generating several duplicates when you submitted your post. (You accidentally posted this topic 4 times.) Are you having network issues? If so, then please wait until you have a stable connection. If you are pressing the submit button more than once, please stop. Press it once, and wait for it to finish processing. Otherwise it creates more work for moderators to clean up, and eventually the system will automatically ban your from entering. Thank you. | |||||

| Did you look up the code to see what the causes for it might be? Codes are only a starting point for diagnosis, they tell you a condition exists but not necessarily what it actually at fault. | |||||

| Why did you do a "lacquer treatment"? Have you done any troubleshooting? p0420 is very common code with several possible causes other than the converter itself. (Codes only tell you that a particular condition exists, not what specific part or parts are causing the problem.) | |||||

| That depends what is actually causing the code. (Of course the code points out a condition rather than a specific part.) What kind of diagnostic steps did the dealer take to determine the cause, and what did they say the problem is? Here's some troubleshooting information if you'd like to so some of your own checking: Also be aware that the dealer is the most expensive option and necessarily the most competent or thorough at diagnosing problems. You'd be better off finding a good independent mechanic for any non-warranty work. (Avoid chain shops such as Pep Boys, Firestone, and Midas as well.) | |||||

| ... O2 sensors were not, and were all fouled thanks to the excessive engine oil that was burned. After my engine was replaced, I replaced the sparkplugs and cleaned the O2 sensors. After all of that, my car ran much better, but it did have a decrease in power that seemed to get worse over time, the mpg was also not where it should have been. After months of a recurring p0420 code, and gas mileage of only 12-18mpg, I decided to suck it up and replace both O2 sensors with replacement ones from Denso. This only solved my check engine light for a day or two, bef ... | |||||

| ... to get it running and changed the shift solenoid. (I tested all three and changed the bad one) - I thought I fixed the issue but then I got a check engine light within the same day. Got a P0341 with a p0420. - I changed the camshaft position sensor and I ran the codes and only had a p0420 code. - Yesterday I was getting onto the ramp and accelerating heavily and the car died on me on the highway. I had to get it towed off the highway. Once off the highway, scanned the codes and it was only a P0340 code (not P0341). I disconnected and reconnected the cams ... | |||||
