Hi there!
I’m looking to buy a Kia Soul 2021 with IVT transmission. I know Scotty says Jatco’s are questionable at best. Is Kia’s IVT reliable, or any better?
Thanks!
Based on these, I would say there is evidence that they are not very reliable (and really just another CVT):

There are many, many more. RUN.
It’s called “C0GF1” meaning “CVT with no gears intended for small gasoline cars, 1st revision”
Hyundai-Kia usually are good with automatics, things like their A6 series are genuinely great - but their new CVT/DCT ARE TRASH.
exploded on a test drive for these reviewers
the same way their DCTs feel like what VW had 15 years ago (the first DSGs) their CVTs work worse then what Nissan had 15 years ago (~JF015E)
No, that is a horrible transmission.
It is still very new technology, and it’s best to not be a guinea pig for it - doesn’t matter the automaker. It can be Toyota or Honda, and I would still say to avoid it for many years; let’s see how it pans out. Long term reliability is a big ??
Yep, Hyundai-Kia have been making pretty terrible new transmissions.

The only safe bet is to get their older 4/6 speed conventional automatics cause they are reasonably reliable and cost nothing to rebuild.
Neither.
Too new. Only time will tell, but not placing any bets coming from Hyundai/Kia they'll be any good for the long term.
No way I would trust Kia or Hyundai particularly with a new technology. Buy either a Toyota or Honda; much better than any Kia or Hyundai product.
What's your opinion on the new IVT vs CVT transmissions ? I see some new Kia/Hyundai use a lot of IVT. What's more reliable ?
please search the forum before posting a new question. Thanks.
Oh wow that was fast! And also very informative! Thank you all for your help.
It's just that I only have the ability to buy a new vehicle, and I don't know if I should trust the new Honda CVTs either since they have a history of problems. Probably a safer choice on reliability than Kias though. Do you know anyone with a CVT who was able to get many miles out of that car with no issues ?
it was so fast that we went back to the future

A lot of Corolla and Prius owners do manage to get a lot of millage on their CVTs without major brakes downs - if they service them very frequently.
I've herd of a few cases of some Jatcos lasting a long time but they are RARE, and the owners usually drive mostly highway and never give the car more than a quarter pedal of gas.
None at all. If I were you, I'd find a vehicle with a manual 5 speed transmission.
Hyundai/Kia are trying there damnest to take a big chunk out of the Asian car market with the long term warranty offer. Problem is there design/component qualifications are marginal at best. I would pass until that trani has 2 to 3 years of manufacture under its belt. Having worked with both the Japanese and the Koreans on product developments and manufacturing in my career, NOBODY can beat the Japanese culture for there committment to quality in my opinion.
Worse than past Jatco CVTs. I would run away from that transmission and look at the ones from Toyota and Honda.
