Tonight, I noticed a noise coming from or around the serpentine belt. You only hear it at idle, for a bit when you take off then it goes away. Its kind of a moaning sound. Thanks!!

2001 Grand Marquis, auto transmission. 210,000 miles

I noticed this sound this morning when the car was warming up. I have no idea what it could be besides a pulley.
Any ideas?

Thanks!!

How old is the belt? Check its condition.

You can briefly run the engine without the fan belt to see if the noise goes away. If it does, check all belt-driven accessories and pulleys.

I did that. Sound was still there. My mechanic is thinking something with the time chain tensioner

Well if the noise is still there with the fan belt removed it's obviously nothing belt driven. Your mechanic should be able to use a stethoscope to pinpoint the source.

Belt was put on Jan 2022. The car has had a small exhaust leak. I can no longer hear that, so I wonder if it might not be that.

sounds like a failed water pump rattling around to me

would it make a sound with the belt off?

It depends. Some water pumps are driven by the accessory belt, and some are driven internally by the engine.

The car has had a small exhaust leak.

yes leaking exhausts can generate an entire spectrum of sounds.

My mechanic is thinking that what we thought was a small exhaust was the timing chain taping. Now he feels the tensioner is out or going out. $1500 to replace everything.

That would be unusual for a maintained engine, and that's way too much money. I would get a second opinion.

That is to replace everything in the timing area. Tensioners, chain, guides, everything,
He only charges $70 and hour for labor and he works alone. He said $1500 is worse case and the sound in getting worse. I wonder if what i thought was an exhaust leak at startup was the timing chain tapping and that the guides or tensioner was getting weak. Still the "wobble" sound now sounds more like a harmonic balancer or water pump
