Hey Scotty! I have an 02 Camry that shakes all around between 70-85mph but goes away after 90mph+. I need to point our that I bought 4 cheap Chinese struts 2 years ago (20,000 miles ago) and they are not leaking or bouncing too much yet. I need to figure out whether this high-speed shaking is being caused by my tires (which are due for a balance and rotation) or the cheap struts. Can cheap struts in general cause shaking at high speed regardless of the tires? Thank you!
Stop breaking the law by driving over the speed limit, then it won't shake anymore.
Jack up the car and pull on the wheels, 12 o'clock/ 6 o'clock and 6-9 o'clock and feel for play. High speed shaking can be caused by bad ball joints (first test) or tie rods (second test). You didn't give the mileage. If your struts were worn out, odds are, the rest of the suspension will also need attention soon.
Your tires need to be inspected for defects and replaced if found as soon as possible. Don't drive fast until you get this fixed. If a tire fails at highway speeds, you could lose control and cause a serious accident.
I had huge vibrations when driving over 95-100km/h, turned out all my Pirelli tires had a defect from the time they were bought. When they showed me how the treads, blocks and ribs were making mini-wiggling while spinning them on the machine, it was obvious that was the source of the issue. Now I'm with Continental and the vibrations stopped.
Hey Scotty! I just got 2 new tires installed in the back of my 2002 Camry at a shop and they said they would do both installation and balance, but for some reason it started shaking at high speeds but it didn't do it before when I had the old tires, what could it be?
Attached below you can see the pics of the new back tires installed:
